AICON GALLERY OPENS IN THE WEST END
Art dealing brothers Prajit and Projjal K. Dutta inaugurated their new London gallery dedicated to contemporary art from the Indian subcontinent with the opening of Aicon Gallery in March in a 4,000 square-foot two-floor space in the heart of the West End, near the Royal Academy of Arts. The space was previously occupied by international franchise Gagosian Gallery.

THAILAND ARTISTS ROCK ABOUT LOVE

Thailand's creative scene abounds in crossover acts and collaborations. Now the mainstream genre of the pop music video (MV) is getting a cutting-edge makeover by Petch Osathanugrah, an acclaimed rock musician and art patron.
Petch commissioned 10 Thai visual artists and cineastes to shoot video segments for his first album in 20 years, Let's Talk About Love. The artists include conceptualist Rirkrit Tiravanija (SEE ALMANAC 1 & 2), pop painter "Lolay" Thaweesak Srithongdee and video installation artists Kamol Phaosavasdi and Porntaweesak Rimsakul. Movie directors Wisit Sasanatieng, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang (SEE AAP 47) and Apichatpong Weerasethakul (SEE AAP 52) also joined.

SHERMAN GALLERIES GOES NON-PROFIT
In a visionary move, Gene Sherman, founder and owner of Sherman Galleries, at the forefront of contemporary art in Australia, will cease trading as a commercial gallery, redefining its activities as the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation. The new venture will be dedicated to commissioning, exhibiting and documenting contemporary art from Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

ARMENIAN ARTISTS MAKE FRIENDS IN FRANCE

For the official “Cultural Season of Armenia in France” a full spectrum of Armenian cultural activities have taken place throughout the country this year, from art and fashion shows to musical and theatrical performances. Warmly received by Europe’s large Armenian Diaspora, star shows such as “Armenia Sacra,” an exhibition of medieval manuscripts at the Louvre, are also drawing a broader public.

DIFC GULF ART FAIR LAUNCHES IN DUBAI
The DIFC Gulf Art Fair kicked off auspiciously on March 7 just as the ink of French president Jacques Chirac's pen was drying in a formal agreement for the Louvre's new Abu Dhabi outpost. The UAE's first contemporary art fair is one of many recent international courtships. Power suitors, including the Guggenheim Foundation and auction house Christie's, marked territory in early 2006 (SEE AAP 50), while stellar architects Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando and Jean Nouvel are designing what locals hope will be a dynamic arts infrastructure.
